Bach and his circle

Peter has a longstanding fascination for baroque music and its performance on historical instruments. His recent acquisition of a fine locally-built harpsichord has re-ignited this interest in terms of planning some special concerts. The next such event is a recital of chamber string and vocal repertoire, entitled ‘JS Bach and His Circle’.

Single-manual harpsichord – Steve Hunt 1999

The music of JS Bach needs no introduction, but less well-known is the circle of colleagues and earlier composers who influenced his style. This recital shows how musical ideas and approaches were shared amongst a ‘virtual’ circle of musicians, even if they were active in different places and times.

‘Peter Roennfeldt and Friends’ is a flexible ensemble of colleagues who enjoy performing interesting repertoire together. Period instrument string players Margaret Connolly, Wayne Brennan, Nicholas Tomkin and Daniel Curro, as well as soprano Rachael Griffin and baritone Michael Strasser, will join Peter on this occasion.

Nazareth Lutheran Church in Woolloongabba is the venue for this recital. It is a wonderful historic building with ideal acoustics for chamber music. The program of works by Bach, Pachelbel, Rosenmüller, Buxtehude and Telemann comprises sonatas, cantatas and a suite. These are typical genres of their time but each selected piece demonstrates great individuality.
